Ride the 16 mile Loop at Rampart Reservoir

For a beautiful half-day mountain lake experience with great views, this is it.

Where the water is as blue as the Colorado sky! If you'd like a day at the lake in Central Colorado, this is the place to go. Rampart Reservoir rests on a granite plateau at 9000 ft of elevation, about 10 miles northwest of Colorado Springs and 4 miles east of Woodland Park. It is one of the favorite fishing, hiking, biking, and picnicking areas in the region. Reaching the trail around the reservoir from the Rainbow Gulch trailhead is the perfect way to add a beautiful stream-side trek and avoid the parking hassles at the dam end of the reservoir.

Length of Trail: approx. 16 Miles Roundtrip

Elevation Gain: 908 Ft. Gain

Trails: Green

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Duration: Plan on 3-3.5 hours

We ride the entire 16 mile trail loop around the lake.

The ride starts/ends at the Rainbow Gulch trailhead to the lake, around the lake, and back is approximately 16 miles long. You will not experience a significant elevation gain at any one point, but because the lake was formed where 12 different streams flowed into West Monument Creek, you will climb at least a dozen different ridges as you work your way around the lake. Intermediate mountain biking skill is highly recommended for this adventure as there are difficult areas you will need to hike-the-bike around to be safe.

We want to practice safety and trail etiquette.

  • Yield Appropriately Generally, hikers going uphill have the right of way. Bicyclists should yield to hikers and equestrians, and hikers should yield to equestrians.
  • Be Mindful of Sound Keep voices low and avoid loud music or phone calls so others can enjoy the natural sounds.
  • Stay on the Trail Cutting switchbacks or going off-trail damages vegetation, causes erosion, and disrupts wildlife habitats.
  • Be Friendly A simple nod or greeting to fellow trail users contributes to a welcoming atmosphere.
